Lying in the lap of Himalayas the paradise land of Kashmir Valley. The numerous trekking opportunities offered by this valley, the meet and greet with the nature, peace is what makes it the ‘heaven on earth’.
Somewhere in between this beautiful valley lies the Kashmir Great Lakes. Although there are many treks offered by the crown of India i.e. Jammu and Kashmir but Kashmir Great Lakes still stand at number one when talked about the right proportion of adventurous , fun and divine experience. This trek offers an unforgettable experience that any trekker, be it be a beginner or a highly trained will cherish for his lifetime. All the mesmerizing views and experiences this trek has to offer just hits you in the right spot of your heart.
The region is overall surrounded with dense flora, bouquets of diverse flowers and mountains covered with blankets of snow. The path which may seem tiring at first offers such a great incentive of serene landscapes and heart filling adventure that one will be filled with the zeal of going through it.
Away from the concrete jungle and civilization , The Himalayan range that expands itself in India furnishes the Kashmir Great Lakes trekkers with a staggering, once in a blue moon chance to observe the unmatched appeal of the valley
First step of the trek will be a 3 hour drive from Srinagar to Sonmarg where the basecamp is situated. From symmetrical tree rows , lush gardens and sparkling lakes in Srinagar to ‘Meadow of Gold’, Sonmarg will put you in the right mood to conquer the 8 day trek. We will organise a get-to-know session with the team at Shitakadi Base Camp. The plan and itinerary will be briefly discussed before dinner.
You will start the actual treak at day 2 with a steep ascent towards the medow of Shekdur, where you will be provided with a short break before Heading to Ninchnai. The Trekker of India guide will show you the last point from where you can collect the dry food items and other refreshments. You will experience dense maple and pine trees and little rays of light shooting through which is perfect feast for the eyes in the Sonmarg Valley. You might notice a transition in the vegetation from maple trees to Bhoj Patra or Silver Birch trees , and thats when you know that you have reached Shekdur. Shekdur offers a quck ascent and then a descent. The last stretch of the present trek is a riverside trail through a valley with snow-clad tops on the two sides. The stream valley denotes the start of Nichnai and further downstream, there will be a lot of level green knolls to set up our tents for the evening.
On the third day the trekkers experience less of an elevation and more of a flat gradient along with little climbs and descent near Nichnai Pass. The area you camped at night, directionally the right side has to be left behind by crossing the river to the left side and then cover an ascent. The Ninchai pass which resembles a wide tunnel is followed by a rocky path and then lush scenery again with carpets of wildflowers. During the descent from Nichnai pass you will witness occasional waterfalls. There will be a icy cold stream crossing before reaching the day’s destination, Virshansar Lake camp site. Vishansar Lake is a large portion of a km away from the campground, settled at the foot of four transcending tops. Kishansar top is the nearest, whose reflection sparkles in the lake during the day. Like every single Himalayan lake, Vishansar changes its shading relying upon the day’s climate.
The twins Vishansar and Kishansar lakes are mesmerizing creations which takes a whole day to explore the beauty. Kishansar is half km away from Vishansar lets you settle down in the surroundings. The day can be utilised perfectly to notice the transition in colour among the lakes over a day. In changes from a reddish hue in the dawn to blue sparkle in the day, and when the say ends it changes its colour to murky grey reflections. You can also enjoy fishing out trout from the lake with a special permit from Srinagar.
On this day you will experience the frist sharp ascent along a ridge after crossing the big blue lake which leads to the top. At the top , there is Gadsar Pass at 13,700ft. which is the highest achievable elvation on this trek. Reaching this point will surprise you with the mesmerizing view of the twin lakes VishansaranfKishansar along with few other nature’s creations such as peaks , lakes, valley which fall beyond LOC. From here a relieving descent will first take you to Yamsar Lake, which has story behind it which says it is associated with Lord Yama. This is followed by certain other nameless lakes and then finally we reach at the Gadsar Lake lying on the foot of high cliffs. There is an abundant view of the red and purple iris which will lead you to the charming water body which is indeed covered with more iris flowers. While to our surprise, the other side of the lake shows a heap of fallen snow slabs from the high peaks. Camping by the sir of Gadsar Lake is a real pleasure.
On day 6, we will set off to Satsar Lake which shows a heavy transition in the landscape. We will cross a small but very significant army camp. Following the camp there will be a stream which we will have to cross for the further uphill trek. There is an alternative to cross the stream by a bridge which is a kilo metre away from the stream crossing point, but it is highly suggested to stick with the team during the trek. Since both the lakes are present at the same elevation there is no dynamic change in the angle of inclination. In any case, the level path is no less stupendous, as it takes you along a way directly over a profound waterway valley and thick line of trees. At the point when the trees line end and an open glade starts, focus to your right side to recognize a couple of mountain cavities, perhaps anticipating to increase lakes whenever later on. This spot is named Maengandob. Satsar Lake is a little separation ahead from here. It is really a painstakingly covered assortment of seven interconnected lakes, which can be separated relying upon the season.
